The May Day Guide

Yay for May! We have two bank holiday weekends coming up next month, hopefully with some sunshine, and we can’t wait! Even though the days of partying on Sunday and staying in bed on Monday are gone, bank holidays are precious extra days to spend quality time with your family! We’ve got you covered with a guide of family-friendly activities that you can get up to.

The North West

Keeping it local, the first stop on our Bank Holiday guide is the home of WTT HQ – the North West. For a fun day in the city centre, head to the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester! With daily exhibitions, shows and workshops, there’s something for everyone to enjoy here, and the free admission makes the whole day super affordable! To let the kids blow off some steam in the fresh air, the Crocky Trail is the perfect destination. Just outside Chester, the adventure playground is a haven for kids and adults alike; a fun way to spend quality time as a family, and squeeze in some all-important exercise! The last stop in the North West is Chester Zoo. Here, a fun day out is always guaranteed as you can see your favourite animals from all over the world, attend workshops and exhibitions, and let the kids run wild on the playgrounds if you need a pit stop.

The North East

If you fancy taking the kids for a more educational day out, the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford is not to be missed! The whole family can learn about everything media, from photography, TV and radio in a fun and interactive setting. There’s even a cinema to sit back and watch your favourite new film! For a more outdoorsy day with a twist, head to Ouseburn Farm in the heart of Newcastle city centre. The kids will love to get up close to a range of different animals and take part in the farm activities! Fingers crossed it won’t be raining over the Bank Holiday weekend, but if it is, where’s better to go than an aquarium? The Blue Reef Aquarium is by the coast north east of Newcastle city centre, and hosts a huge variety of marine animals. Set out in exciting zones, your day will range from seeing piranhas and predators, to relaxing in the cafe while the kids let off some steam in the play area.

The Midlands

For an adrenaline-packed family day out in the Midlands, Alton Towers is the place to go! Although it’s known best for the huge rollercoasters, Alton Towers is also a great place for younger children and families, with plenty of child-friendly rides and attractions. If you aren’t a huge thrill-seeker, the MAD Museum in Stratford-upon-Avon may be more up your street. It’s a unique museum filled with fun, interactive art, machines and contraptions for the whole family to play with! For a day in the park with a difference, head to Wonderland in Telford! This huge area of woodland is set in a fairy-tale; the kids will love playing with their favourite characters in the park, play areas, and on the rides!

London and the South East

If you’re in the capital over the bank holiday weekend, head to one of London’s biggest attractions: the Natural History Museum. There’s so much to do and plenty to see, the kids will love how interactive the exhibits and activities are! There’s often nothing better than a family walk, and Epping Forest is the perfect destination for that. With acres of woodland, ponds and parks, it’s a stunning backdrop for full family days out, including your four-legged friends! If you fancy something more than just a walk, we definitely recommend BeWILDerwood in Norwich. Get lost (not literally!) in this adventure land with the mystical characters, their treehouses and much, much more!

The South West

For a truly unique day out, venture down to Wookey Hole Caves in Somerset. Explore real limestone caves and tunnels, and follow their twists and turns for a real adventure. And, if that’s not enough to entice you, the fun-packed day also includes pirate-themed adventure golf, a circus show and plenty of play areas! The final family day out in our guide is Crealy Theme Park in Devon. This theme park is the ultimate family destination, with great rides and attractions for all ages! While the bigger kids can get their thrills on the big rollercoasters, the younger ones can play on the family attractions and make some new friends in the Animal Barn or at Meerkat Manor!

What will you be getting up to this bank holiday? Make sure you’re ready for your day whatever the weather! If none of these take your fancy, or you want a day filled with relaxation, get cosy with the kids and put on your favourite films – don’t forget those comfy lounge suits and PJ’s!
