Top 5 Fashion Films

Movies are a great place to get some fashion inspiration. Whether it’s Marilyn Monroe gracefully strutting around on screen in her pink satin gown in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes; or Emma Stone tap-dancing in front of the LA skyline in her flowing yellow dress in La La Land; these iconic celebrity fashion moments stick with us.

If you’re a lover of all things fashion and film like us, we’ve compiled a list that is bound to give you style envy, and give you a real insight into the industry as a whole.

    1. Clueless (1995)

The nineties were an unusual time for fashion. Everyone was getting over the bold silhouettes created by the boxy 80’s style, which meant that people were trying something different in the 90’s. From Grunge to Brit-pop, clothes were changing to reflect the different variations of pop culture that were around at the time. Clueless was a perfect example of the preppy look that took over a lot of high-school American TV & film in the 90’s. Alicia Silverstone’s Cher pulled off the tailored-cool look in Clueless, unashamed to embrace patterns and never failing to rock a mini-skirt.

    1. Sex and the City (2008)

Carrie Bradshaw will never fail to make a fashion list.  Set in glamorous New York, Sex and the City (TV series & films) may be all about the many relationships formed in The Big Apple, but no woman could watch without admiring Carrie and the rest of the gang’s love of designer fashion. Manolo Blahnik’s anyone?

    1. The September Issue (2009)

This behind-the-scenes documentary following Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and her staff as they put together the September 2007 issue of American Vogue magazine, is the perfect insider fashion film. If you’ve ever adoringly studied the pages of a fashion magazine, idolising how clothes are artfully presented, then you need to see this film. The process is rough as Wintour strives for absolute perfection; Vogue and Wintour take fashion very seriously.

    1. Funny Face (1957)

This musical rom-com is the perfect film for a Sunday afternoon pick-me-up, as Audrey Hepburn plays a bookshop clerk picked up to be the hottest new fashion model. This is a feel-good song ’n’ dance film with insights into the fashion modelling world in the 50’s. Audrey is a complete style icon.

    1. The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

It is said that Meryl Streep’s character in this film was inspired by Vogue editor Anna Wintour herself, and after watching The September Issue, you will probably see some definite similarities. Many designers lent clothes and accessories to the production, and it’s estimated to be the most expensively costumed film in history!

LOVE Funny Face. If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favour and get a copy.

I would add ‘Confessions Of A Shopaholic’ to the list. All about fashion and a fun highly watchable film. Perfect for girls night in!
