5 things you only know if you grew up with brothers

In honour of Brothers and Sisters day today, we’ve dedicated a post to those of us who have grown up with an older or younger brother. Brothers are basically there to torment you and make your childhood hell, but sometimes, on the odd occasion they’ll do something that makes you proud and grateful to have them in your life.

Most of the time though, they were just really annoying.

1.You grew up watching Lord of the Rings and Star Trek

While all your other girl friends watched Barbie movies and high-school romances, you were stuck watching whatever your brother wanted to, which meant action-packed films, horror movies and sci-fi shows. You might not have liked it at the time, but now you’re the first to book tickets to the latest Marvel feature.

2.Your brother’s friends were your biggest crushes, but were completely off-limits

If you had an older brother, you most likely fell in love with one or more of his friends. Your brother would know this and try to keep you apart at any means necessary. You would do whatever it takes to make your presence known whenever his friends were around the house. You’d also borrow your mom’s lipstick and favourite perfume to really make an impression.

3.You grew up watching sports

Most of our brothers were probably pushed into playing some sort of sports, which meant that you had to be there to see them play every weekend. Even if you had plans, you had to be there to cheer on your brother. You always made out like you hated every minute, but you actually ended up quite enjoying sports, and now you can’t imagine life without supporting your favourite team/player every game.

4.Your first boyfriend was their worst enemy

A lot of people think dads are overprotective when their daughter starts dating, but if you grew up with brothers you know they are far worse. When your brother found out who you were dating, he most likely acted like he didn’t care to your face, but he would scrutinise every little thing your boyfriend did, and most likely make some sort of ‘threat’ if he ever hurt you. Most of the time this was played out by them trying to compete over who is the most ‘manly’.  Though he’d never admit it, this was the most love your brother might ever show you.

5.They showed you no mercy

Brothers are never very good at showing their feelings to their sisters. In fact, most of the time, a sister was there as a toy to throw around, practice wrestling moves on, and be the target of every joke and prank. Being a girl doesn’t change anything in your brother’s eyes, and he would show you no mercy. He expected you to fight back. You probably feel equipped to deal with a lot now, including knowing a few self-defence moves.
